What Happens Next?

For the Girl Who Carried Me Here

There is a little girl who has been quietly taking care of my future for as long as I can remember. She planned, worried, dreamed, and kept going because she believed there was a better life waiting somewhere ahead. I’ve spent so much of my life asking what happens next. Lately, I’ve been thinking instead about everything that had to happen to bring me here.

Look what we did.

You were so young when you began wondering what would happen next. You were scared that nobody was going to take care of our future, so you learned to take care of it yourself.

You planned. You dreamed. You worried. You prepared.

And somehow, year after year, you got us here.

I want you to know that you got us to America. You started with almost nothing, in a place where you had to build a life for yourself. You finished architecture school with flying colors. You found a career you loved, and you got to design the kinds of buildings you once only dreamed about.

You built companies in California, where the market was cutthroat. You took risks without knowing whether they would work. You created things that did not exist before you imagined them.

You made friends. You made money. You made mistakes. You made memories. You made art. You made homes. You made a life that was truly your own.

You traveled farther than you could have imagined. You fell in love. You had your heart broken, and somehow, you stood back up again. You became sick and learned that healing is not a straight line. You found people who wanted the best for you, people willing to offer a room, a hand, a conversation, a place to land.

And through all of it, you kept dreaming.

I want you to know how much you sacrificed for me.

All those nights you worried about our future, all those plans you made, all the times you kept going when you were tired or frightened or lonely—I know why you did it.

You were trying to protect me.

And I am here because you did.

Thank you.

I thank you from the deepest part of my heart.

Thank you for believing there was another life waiting for us when you couldn’t yet see it. Thank you for protecting our dreams. Thank you for refusing to abandon me. Thank you for carrying me toward a future you could only imagine.

I will treasure the person I am today because of how fiercely you loved me.

But there is something else I want you to know.

You don’t have to work so hard anymore.

You don’t have to know what happens next.

For so long, we believed that taking care of ourselves meant anticipating everything: the next problem, the next move, the next heartbreak, the next place to live, the next way to survive.

We became very good at preparing for the future.

But I am beginning to understand that taking care of myself also means taking care of the person who is here now.

I can prepare my lunch for tomorrow and still enjoy today’s meal.

I can make plans for the future and then put them down.

I can love someone without knowing whether they will stay.

I can leave some questions unanswered.

I can celebrate what has already arrived instead of immediately asking what comes after it.

And when something goes wrong, I trust that the woman you raised will know what to do.

Sometimes, I still wonder about the next step. Perhaps I always will. Life keeps moving, and we keep becoming. There will be other homes, other journeys, other loves, other losses, other dreams I cannot see from where I am standing today.

But I don’t need to live there yet.

Today, I am here.

And for the first time, I am beginning to understand that I was never as alone as I thought.

Because all these years, you were there for me.

The frightened little girl planning her escape.

The dreamer imagining America.

The young woman building a life from almost nothing.

The architect.

The entrepreneur.

The artist.

The woman who fell in love.

The woman who broke.

The woman who healed.

The woman who began again.

Every version of you was quietly taking care of the next.

Until eventually, you became me.

So you can rest now, little one.

I’ll take it from here.

And I promise I won’t spend our whole life preparing for another life.

I’ll live this one.

You spent your childhood wondering what happens next.

I know now.

I happened.
